The Courage to Charge: Overcoming Self-Doubt in the Healing Business

When I first started working as a reader and healer, setting a price on my sessions felt like trying to solve a riddle. I was nervous, doubtful and feeling guilty about charging anything at all. I’d always wanted to help people and doing this work felt like a gift I "should" just give away. At the same time I was learning (slowly!) that I needed to respect my own Energy and value the years of practice, learning and life experiences that made me good at what I do.

If you’re feeling the same struggle, I want to share what I’ve learned about moving past self-doubt and standing by the worth of your healing work.

The Self-Doubt Trap: “Am I Good Enough?"

It’s so common for new healers, readers and anyone stepping into this kind of work to be overwhelmed by self-doubt. I know because I’ve been there! When I started, for every client who walked into my healing room I was met with my own inner dialogue of please let me get a message for them and please let me not mess this up. Every session felt like a test - wondering if this would be the one where nothing would come through or the one where I’d disappoint someone.

For about 18 months I had that nagging feeling every time, despite getting great feedback from clients. It took a long time to reframe that fear and realise it wasn’t actually about doubting myself - it was about doubting that Spirit would show up. As soon as I reframed it like that I could start letting go of the self-doubt. Of course Spirit would show up! My job was to trust in the process and get out of my own way.

The Pricing Hurdle: Setting Your Value

One of the biggest challenges in this journey was pricing my work. When I first started, I barely charged anything, thinking, I just want to help people; is it fair to charge for that? But I was also starting to feel drained. People were booking sessions left and right and I was realising that without valuing my time, I was lacking my own Energy balance.

Setting my prices was a turning point in recognising my own worth (Seriously, there is so much self awareness and growth that comes as a bonus with this work!). Pricing isn’t about attaching a dollar amount to your gifts; it’s about acknowledging the time, Energy and work that goes into what you offer. When I finally set a price, it felt both scary and freeing. I was putting value on not just my skills, but the effort I’d invested over years to hone them.

And every time I got the nudge from the universe to increase my prices, there’d be a moment of panic - What if people stop booking? Every time I honoured that nudge, it opened the door to a fresh wave of clients, ready and willing to invest in their own healing.

Why Healers Deserve to be Paid

The truth is, our work as healers, readers and Energy workers takes a significant, ongoing learning process and it takes a lot to get good at it. It’s not just about reading a card or saying what you feel.

We’re tapping into Spirit, fine-tuning our intuition and sharing deeply personal messages with the people who need them. We’re helping people move through life-changing situations, offering comfort and sometimes providing closure that can't be sourced any other way.

That kind of work isn’t easy and it shouldn’t be free. When we undervalue our work, we send a message to ourselves (and The Universe!) that it isn’t worth much. If we don’t value our time and Energy, why should anyone else?

Practical Tips for Pricing with Confidence

If you’re struggling to set prices or feel confident about charging for your work, here are a few things I’ve learned along the way:

  1. Trust in the Value of Your Experience: Think of all the time you’ve spent learning, practicing and perfecting your skills. Those years of experience have value! Pricing your work is a way of honouring that journey.

  2. Listen to Your Intuition (and the Universe’s Nudges): Trust when you feel that it’s time to raise your rates. Every time I ignored that feeling, the Universe found a way to nudge me in the right direction (even if it meant temporarily drying up my bookings until I made the change).

  3. Know That You’re Worth It: It’s not just the reading, the healing or the guidance you’re charging for. It’s the Energy, focus and intention you bring into each session.  All those things and the unique way you provide them are valuable.

  4. Remember, Pricing Creates Boundaries: Pricing is also about setting a boundary with clients. By charging appropriately, you’re ensuring that both you and the people you serve respect your time and Energy.

Final Thoughts: Standing by Your Worth

Learning to stand by the worth of my work has been one of the most challenging parts of this journey - but also one of the most empowering.

I know now that I have to value my own time and Energy in order to be fully present and effective for my clients. By valuing what I do, I’m inviting in clients who value it as well and are ready and willing to embrace the positive changes that this work offers.

If you’re a healer, reader or Energy worker struggling with the self-doubt and pricing hurdle, know this: your work is valuable. What you bring to others is worth every cent and every ounce of Energy you put into it. Trust in the worth of what you do and the right people will always find you.
